Making Art and Making Friends

A group of people in pink aprons stand in a room in Laos, each holding up a landscape painting they created. Art supplies and canvases are on tables, and a banner behind them reads “Making A Better World.”.

The Intergenerational Art Project creates a safe space for people to connect while making art. Sponsored by the Inner West Council, recent sessions brought together local seniors who paired up with painting partners from the Australian Catholic University.

Building Bridges Across Generations

This unique program, designed by Good Neighbours Australia for Sydney’s multicultural communities, fosters meaningful relationships across the generations. Through creativity and collaboration, participants discover common ground and celebrate cultural diversity.

“It was lovely to meet and chat with the students and the art teacher,” one Inner West senior participant commented, while another summarised the benefits of the program as “Connection, supporting mental health, relaxation, learning to draw and paint, and creating lots of laughter!”

Meanwhile, young participants also found the experience of connecting with the elderly “a rewarding and educational experience” and a “great way to meet new people”.

More than just creative workshops, the painting sessions offer opportunities to make meaningful connections, reminding us that community is built through relationships. By bridging generational gaps, we create stronger, more inclusive bonds where everyone feels valued and connected.
