Good Start: Village Ventures
In remote parts of Vietnam, many families from ethnic minority groups are still recovering from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, along with a series of natural disasters that have damaged farming infrastructure and led to livestock losses. Such losses of income and assets have left households at risk of falling back into poverty and facing ongoing food insecurity.
To address this challenge, Good Neighbours partnered with the community to design a project that supports households to rebuild their livelihoods, improve nutrition and reduce poverty, through small-scale livestock farming.
The Good Start: Village Ventures program is designed to improve the livelihoods and nutritional intake of vulnerable households in remote communities of Vietnam by equipping families with the skills and resources they need, the program will help increase household income, achieve food security and build a sustainable future for them and their communities.
Small-scale livestock farming is ideal for rural Vietnam, where around 62 % of the population live in rural areas and a large proportion of households still depend on agriculture for their livelihood. This approach has low barriers for a wide range of households, including single-parent families, households with members with disabilities, and elderly caregivers looking after grandchildren. It’s easy to manage, requires low initial investment and provides a steady income when supported by proper training and resources.
Through this program, we:
- Provide training in best-practice livestock farming and small business management;
- Construct livestock pens for safe and hygienic animal housing; and
- Empower women by strengthening household economic development and community capacity.
Participants learn essential animal husbandry techniques, including disease prevention and shelter construction. A local cooperative plays a vital role in skill development and securing the supply chain. Families also receive guidance on financial management and reinvestment strategies to ensure stable incomes and long-term food security.
