Lending a hand to our neighbours in Ukraine
Good Neighbours Global Efforts for Ukrainian Refugees
In 2022 Good Neighbours Australia began supporting displaced Ukrainians in Sydney through our partnerships with Blue and Yellow Hearts and the Ukrainian Council of NSW, as thousands of new arrivals were welcomed with food hampers, clothing, translation services and other supports required to settle in Australia.
In 2023 we turned our efforts towards supporting our Good Neighbours colleagues in Romania, as funds were raised and a shipping container was packed with winter apparel, blankets and toys to support their humanitarian efforts amongst displaced people in both Romania and Ukraine.
Global Good Neighbours’ Efforts in Ukraine
More recently, following a multi-sector needs assessment in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, a region in eastern Ukraine which is home to over 440,000 internally displaced people – one of the largest populations in the country – our global colleagues identified mental health and psychosocial support as a key protection concern they could address.
From November 2024 to March 2025, Good Neighbours Romania/Ukraine, with funding assistance from Good Neighbours Japan, delivered protection services to 843 individuals, comprehensive case management to 729 people, and psychosocial support to 2,267 people in the area.
The psychosocial sessions supported 667 children, in particular, aiming to prevent or mitigate trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder. Program results demonstrated clear improvement in emotional resilience and recovery among participants.

Meanwhile, Good Neighbours Australia continues to support children and their families in Ukraine through our annual Winter Warmer appeals, partnering with Wrap with Love Australia, Underworks and the Australian Crafters’ Aid Network to provide 1,000 blankets, thousands of socks, thermals and over 700 hand-knitted sets of children’s winter apparel this year alone.
