Child Sponsorship Story: Thuy’s Journey

Every morning, when the sun’s not yet out, Thuy leaves home to begin her 60-minute trek to school. For many other people, 60 minutes is time enough to study, read a book or catch up with friends. But for Thuy, 60 minutes represents a journey of determination, and also of hope. 

Thuy lives with her grandparents in a remote and mountainous hamlet in Vietnam. “As I live the furthest away from school, my journey is longer than all my friends,” Thuy said.

Thuy’s parents live 200 kilometres away, so they can work to support the family. 

That means Thuy wakes up around 4am each day, so she can prepare breakfast for her elderly grandparents and do some chores, before heading off to school. 

Her journey to school is long and tiring. “I have to walk from home to the foot of the mountain. The road is very difficult to walk, full of stones and gravel. Sometimes it rains and makes my clothes wet. The road gets very slippery and my steps are wobbly, but I still keep walking. I only think about getting to school, so I can learn and know more.”

For Thuy, her daily journey to school is precious time. “While the road is long and tiring, I’m still happy because every step I take is a step closer to my dream of studying.”
