Better Life for Girls: End Period Poverty

Good Neighbours Australia is launching its first international project in Bangladesh, aiming to tackle period poverty in rural schools. Through the ‘Better Life for Girls’ menstrual health program, we’ll help generate awareness surrounding menstrual health hygiene, provide girls with dignity kits and improve access to safe and sanitary washrooms at school.

Partners and Donors

In partnership with two Australian community-based organisations, Wrapped with Love Inc. and Days for Girls Australia (DfGAL), GNAU will be distributing 3,000 environmentally friendly washable menstrual kits (DfG Kits) and 3,000 knitted blankets to Bangladesh, thanks to hundreds of generous Australian volunteers.

The project will also be delivered in collaboration with Good Neighbours in Bangladesh to help construct and renovate restrooms in up to five schools, whilst also running peer support and training sessions through ‘Girls’ Clubs.’ The renovations will provide girls with access to clean and safe sanitation facilities, including water and waste disposal bins.

Better Life for Girls - Ending Period Poverty, Raising Awareness About Menstrual Health

Girls can miss out on up to 50 days of school each year due to their menstrual cycle. Moreover, 86% of girls in Bangladesh do not have access to disposal bins or sanitary facilities to manage their periods. This is why the educational sessions through the ‘Girls’ Clubs’ are vital for reducing period poverty and generating awareness on menstrual health management.
